Before Cole Caufield came around, this NHL record had stood for nearly a century.

Back in the 1920s and 1930s, Frank Finnigan was as clutch as they come. If you gave the Ottawa Senators legend overtime, he knew how to finish it.

Finnigan reached 10 career overtime goals in 304 games played, a pace that hadn’t been matched by anyone in the ensuing 88 years since his career ended in 1937.

Until now.

Enter the Montreal Canadiens‘ star Caufield.

Caufield called game with a shot into the roof of the net on Wednesday night against the Nashville Predators. It was his 10th career overtime goal.

And Caufield got to 10 OT goals in just 292 games.

Sportsnet shared the stat on X, prompting some replies using the name “Cole Clutchfield.”

In that win over Nashville, Caufield had also scored the game-tying goal with just 19.5 seconds left in regulation.

“You got to cherish these moments,” Caufield told reporters after the win.

Caufield was then asked about the record.

“It’s pretty cool,” he said. “It’s a lot of overtimes we’re playing in. That’s ten wins, so that’s good.”

Clutch indeed.
