Martin St-Louis believes that the Montreal Canadiens must turn their current strong defensive structure into an offensive weapon in order to go further this season.
Four consecutive wins, a ranking among the top three teams in the NHL, and a defense that’s finally working the way Martin St-Louis and the fans wanted.
But despite these successes, the Montreal coach is not 100% satisfied.
Indeed, he wants his team to score more goals.
Martin St-Louis wants the Canadiens to turn their defensive solidity into an offensive threat
In an interview reported by RDS and written by La Presse Canadienne, St-Louis acknowledged that the Canadiens’ defensive work was “spot on”, but he also added that the team now needs to focus on offensive production.”We’re very organized when we come back into our zone. We’re focused on the job. When the puck is in our zone, we’re organized whether they get the first touch, and we’re organized if we get the first touch.”

The Habs allow an average of only 24.2 shots per game, one of the best performances in the league.
But it’s clear that St-Louis wants even more.
He wants his players to turn those recoveries into scoring chances.
“When you move the puck out despite pressure, you can think about creating something on the counterattack. You probably won’t create anything, but you have to make sure you exit with possession, and then you can apply your own pressure.
I knew we were going to be late in the offensive zone, but I prefer that to being late in the defensive zone. We know we have to be better. There’s no panic. We keep teaching and learning.”

According to him, it’s a matter of confidence and maturity.
