The Chicago Blackhawks lose a tight game against the Vancouver Canucks. Read about game highlights and Tyler Bertuzzi’s controversy.

The Chicago Blackhawks lost 3-2 in the shootout against the Vancouver Canucks. Tyler Bertuzzi had his second goal of the game wiped off the board after the refs determined there was goaltender interference (somehow). Let’s get into some observations, shall we?

Game Notes

The Blackhawks should have won last night, but didn’t. Despite owning the majority of possession numbers (56% Corsi and a 60% expected goals share), they still dropped a two-goal lead. Perhaps that’s being too harsh because Tyler Bertuzzi’s goal really should have counted.

Connor Bedard

Connor Bedard has looked much better compared to last season. Even though he didn’t get any points last night, Bedard registered seven shot attempts and four shots on goal. Bedard’s lack of quality linemates has forced him to be the playmaker, which is fine. But Bedard needs to have games like last night on a nightly basis. Also, the refs call on him “holding” Tyler Myers was incredibly weak.

Jason Dickinson’s Line

Jason Dickinson’s line with Ryan Donato and Ilya Mikheyev was the best line of the night. They had a 79% Corsi and an 83% xG in 9:43 minutes of icetime together. Ilya Mikheyev has had a strong start to the season with three goals and four points in six games. He didn’t register a point last night, but his two-way play was noticeable.

Spencer Knight

Spencer Knight has had a strong start to the season as well. Last night, he had a .938 SV% and stopped 30 of 32 shots on goal. It’s still early, but he’s making a case for a big raise by the end of his extension, which starts in 2026 ($5.8 million for three years).

The Blackhawks next take on the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday at 6 pm CT.
