SAN JOSE, Calif. — Most people do not go to work and stare at the competition for their job, knowing that a bad day at the office could or, in fact, will mean a conversation with the boss that the person in the next cubicle gets your job tomorrow. Yet that is the situation many of the Pittsburgh Penguins veterans find themselves in.
On the three-game road trip, Pittsburgh Hockey Now had the chance to speak with veteran players and youngsters about being a healthy scratch.
The situation is a mosaic of emotion, competition, pride, and an organization balancing the now and the future with a full roster.
“It’s never easy when guys are in and out of the lineup. At the end of the day, this is everyone’s livelihood too, you know,” said Sidney Crosby. “This is what you know you love to do. You want to be out there. Everyone works hard to be out there. But it’s a numbers game sometimes, too.”
There are coming decisions on the forwards crew, where currently one veteran must sit. And that’s mostly been Philip Tomasino. On defense, the situation is much more complicated.
