An NHL insider believes that Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson could be in line for a massive opportunity in early 2026 despite a slow start to the 2025-26 season. It hasn’t been the best of starts for Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson, who is hoping to bounce back this season after a tough 2024-25 campaign filled with injuries, inconsistency and drama from a feud with now-former teammate J.T. Miller.

Pettersson has turned the page on last season, telling reporters over the summer that he is out for revenge this year after spending the entire offseason training hard overseas in his home nation of Sweden.

“I haven’t thought about it, but for myself it’s revenge. I’m not happy with last season. I’m trying to lead by example. But I know that I can become a better leader, in that aspect. I’m trying my best, but also trying to get better.” Pettersson said.

Vancouver Canucks’ Elias Pettersson could be in line for big opportunity in early 2026

While Elias Pettersson’s primary focus is on the Vancouver Canucks and playing a key role in helping them get back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the second time in the last three seasons, the 26-year-old also has his sights set on a big international opportunity in February.

After attending their orientation camp over the summer, NHL insider Rick Dhaliwal revealed that the Swedish Ice Hockey Association and their Head Coach Sam Hallam are keeping an eye on Elias Pettersson to start the 2025-26 season, with Olympic rosters needing to be submitted to the International Ice Hockey Federations (IIHF) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in early January.

Being able to represent your country on the biggest stage is a dream that many young hockey players have growing up and for Elias Pettersson, along with several other members of the Vancouver Canucks, Milano-Cortina 2026 will be their first opportunity to do so after the NHL decided not to go to the Winter Olympics in 2018 or 2022.

For Elias Pettersson, he’s been fortunate enough to represent Sweden on the international stage on several occasions, most recently at the 4 Nations Face-Off earlier this year, which didn’t go so well for him, finishing the tournament with no points in three games.

The Sundsvall, Sweden native will have two-plus months to show Sam Hallam and his coaching staff that he is capable of not only playing at the highest level, but able to contribute on both sides of the puck in their quest for their first Olympic gold medal in 20 years.
