Nick Schmaltz scored a hat trick and the Utah Mammoth beat the San Jose Sharks 6-3 on Friday at the Delta Center.

Schmaltz also had an assist, while Clayton Keller had three assists and one goal. Michael Carcone and Liam O’Brien also scored for the Mammoth. Karel Vejmelka made 18 saves in the victory.

Tyler Toffoli, Jeff Skinner, and Macklin Celebrini scored for the Sharks, who lost their fourth straight game. Yaroslav Askarov played well, despite one major mistake, making 28 saves.

Defensive turnovers were out and about for the San Jose Sharks. Whether it was a turnover on the breakout or Askarov misplaying the puck, the Sharks struggled defensively.

The Sharks’ power play was good again, going 2 for 3. John Klingberg, Timothy Liljegren, and Shakir Mukhamadullin missed the game due to injury. Vincent Iorio made his Sharks debut after being claimed off waivers.

Schmaltz gave the Mammoth a 1-0 lead with a 5-on-3 power play goal at 9:39 of the first period. Logan Cooley found Schmaltz in the low slot for the wide-open one-timer.

Schmaltz scores his second goal of the period at 13:31 after a Sharks turnover. Schmaltz got the puck in the slot and put a wrist shot over the blocker of Askarov.

Toffoli gets the Sharks on the board to make it 2-1 with a power play goal at 5:23 of the second period. A rebound off Vejmelka’s glove fell to the side of the net for an easy tap-in.

Skinner banked in a backhand from the corner off a Mammoth defenseman 1:50 later to make it 2-2.

Askarov mishandles a puck, and O’Brien collects it and puts it in an open net to give the Mammoth a 3-2 lead at 16:09.

Schmaltz completes the hat trick after he finishes Keller’s feed from behind the net at 54 seconds of the third period.

Carcone pushed it to 5-2 with a wrist shot over the glove of Askarov at 3:25.

Keller finished a pretty passing play to make it 6-2 at 11:32.

Celebrini cut it to 6-3 with a power play goal with 3:09 left in the game. The Sharks forward took a pass from Alexander Wennberg, cut to the middle, and faked a shot before ripping a shot over the glove of Vejmelka.
