PHILADELPHIA — Spokane Chiefs star Berkly Catton got the full National Hockey League experience Monday night in his debut with the Seattle Kraken.

The 19-year-old Saskatoon native went no bucket in his rookie lap, with his hair flowing as he skated on the ice alone before being joined by his teammates for the rest of warmups. Despite Seattle losing its first game of the season in regulation, falling 5-2 to the Philadelphia Flyers, Catton logged his first NHL point in his first game.

Near the midway point of the first period, with the game knotted at zero, Catton, from the hash marks, quickly worked the puck up to Cale Fleury at the blue line. Fleury then rifled the puck toward the net, where it was deflected by Jordan Eberle and in.

Realizing Catton had just logged his first NHL point, Matty Beniers quickly scooped up the puck, which will belong to Catton for the rest of time.

Both of Catton’s parents were in attendance and were shown smiling from ear to ear on the TV broadcast moments after it happened.

Despite the loss, it was a night Catton and his family will never forget. He finished the game plus-1 with one assist, one shot, one blocked shot, and 19 shifts for 13 minutes and 49 seconds of ice time.

The Kraken are now 3-1-2 on the season after six games. With Catton having played one game, he can appear in eight more and still be eligible to return to Spokane. If he reaches 10 games played, his NHL entry-level contract will start and he will no longer be eligible to return to Spokane.

The Chiefs are 6-5 this season, good for fifth place in the Western Conference standings. Spokane returns to the ice Tuesday night to face Edmonton at Rogers Place.
