The strategy is to avoid chalk plays and identify teams that either score or allow tons of first-period goals. Enter Cutter Gauthier, who is currently +1200 to score the first goal in tonight’s Bruins vs. Ducks tilt. Gauthier shouldn’t be too chalky of a play, and his matchup is as good as it gets.

The 21-year-old is tied for the most goals on the Ducks (4), with two of those coming in the first period. In general, Anaheim has been a solid first-period team, ranking 11th in first-period goals (6). Gauthier plays first-line minutes and ranks fourth on the team among forwards in ice time per game. He should see early opportunities to get on the board against a Bruins squad that has been one of the worst defensive first-period teams, allowing a league-high nine goals through eight games.

Additionally, Anaheim is a great even-strength team. It ranks seventh in 5v5 xGoals per 60 and sixth in 5v5 Corsi%, and should continue the trend against a struggling Boston goaltending room. Boston ranks 29th in 5v5 xGoals against per 60. For reference, Gauthier scored his two first-period goals against the Sharks and Penguins, two teams that rank 30th and 28th, respectively, in 5v5 xGoals against per 60. Those two teams are conveniently placed right outside of Boston. Is that a sign for what’s to come? It sure feels like it.
