A few months after having been let go by the Toronto Maple Leafs, former Team President Brendan Shanahan is back on his feet after accepting a new NHL position.

After over a decade with the Toronto Maple Leafs, former President Brendan Shanahan was let go earlier this summer with the organization looking to make sweeping changes.

There were rumours that he would potentially take over the same position in Long Island with the Islanders before they went a different direction. Now a few months later, the former Stanley Cup champion and Hockey Hall of Fame inductee has found a new NHL gig.

According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, Shanahan has taken a position with the league’s Hockey Operations Department. The details are currently unknown, but more information will be released shortly when Dreger makes his appearance on TSN’s Insider Trading.

The prominent NHL insider also mentions that Shanahan will still be courted by several teams should they make a change mid-season. The former Leafs executive is still very highly regarded and should be on several teams’ shortlists moving forward.

If an opportunity presents, whereby a team decides it’s going to make a significant change at the top of it’s hockey department, I would suggest Brendan Shanahan will be a leading candidate for a job like that as well.

Shanahan joined the Maple Leafs in April of 2014 when they officially named him as the team’s president and alternate governor, who would oversee all operations for the club.

Shanahan was the driving force behind the ‘Core-4’ staying together in Toronto for as long as they did. However, after 9 straight post-season berths that ended in heartbreak, usually in the first round, the organization decided it was time for a change

It shouldn’t be too long until another team makes an in-season change and focuses their attention on Shanahan. Until then, he will look to do good with the league in his new gig.
