In the 2nd period of the Golden Knights’ recent home game against the Boston Bruins, Mitch Marner made history in just his 5th game as a member of the franchise.
With 9:34 left on the clock, Marner hopped over the boards to take his place at the top of the five-forward power play unit. 30 seconds later, Tomas Hertl was hit with a high-stick hell that left a mark on his face, earning the Golden Knights a double minor. So, they now had 90 seconds of 5-on-3 time followed by another two minutes and 30 seconds of regular power play time. Marner stayed on the ice for the ensuing draw to kick off the two-man advantage.
The puck was then frozen 75 seconds later with 15 ticks on the 5-on-3. Marner and the entire five-forward unit remained on the ice. The puck was cleared twice in the next 45 seconds, and Mark Stone changed for William Karlsson. Jack Eichel, Pavel Dorofeyev, Hertl, and Marner remained on the ice, each extending a shift well over two minutes. Goaltender Jeremy Swayman froze a puck a few seconds later, which led to Dorofeyev and Hertl heading to the bench. Eichel would head off a few seconds later.
But Marner remained, now pushing a three-minute long shift with 1:43 left on the power play clock. Another stoppage and a couple of clearances later, and Marner finally headed towards the bench with just a few seconds left on the power play clock. All in all, he racked up a 4:14 shift, which is by far the longest of this season, and tied for the longest in the history of the Vegas Golden Knights. In real time (due to stoppages), the shift lasted seven minutes and 51 seconds.
Oddly enough, Marner’s 4:14 marathon shift ties not one but two Golden Knights for the longest ever. On February 22nd, 2025, both Alex Pietrangelo and Brayden McNabb put forth simultaneous 4:14 shifts at the very end of a game against the Vancouver Canucks. The shift began with the Golden Knights killing a penalty and eventually led to a 6-on-5 situation with Vegas defending a lead.
Both Pietrangelo and McNabb helped successfully kill the entire penalty and then remained on the ice when Tomas Hertl buried a game-sealing empty netter.
There’s just one other shift in Vegas’ 626 regular season games that lasted more than four minutes.
Longest Shifts In VGK History
Mitch Marner – 10/16/25 – 4:14
Brayden McNabb – 2/22/25 – 4:14
Alex Pietrangelo – 2/22/25 – 4:14
Shea Theodore – 9/24/23 – 4:03
Brayden McNabb – 11/11/21 – 3:56
Nicolas Hague – 9/16/18 – 3:50
Jack Eichel – 10/16/25 – 3:47
Chandler Stephenson – 11/5/23 – 3:46
Mark Stone – 11/5/23 – 3:43
Brayden McNabb – 12/12/21 – 3:41
Tomas Nosek – 9/27/19 – 3:40
Alex Pietrangelo – 12/31/22 – 3:40
Shea Theodore – 9/29/23 – 3:35
Brayden McNabb – 11/9/21 – 3:34
Zach Whitecloud – 9/17/19 – 3:32
Eichel’s shift during the same game as Marner’s landed 7th in team history as well, while Hertl and Dorofeyev each checked in at 2:49.
There have been a total of 19 shifts longer than 3:30. Many of the shifts involve some special teams, but there was one instance in which Chandler Stephenson and Mark Stone played 3:46 and 3:43 concurrently, all at 5-on-5.
So, Marner has already etched his name in the VGK record books. Have a feeling this won’t be the only time, though I would guess he never has a longer shift no matter how long he plays here.
