Trevor Zegras and Christian Dvorak led the Flyers to a come-from-behind 4-3 shootout win Saturday afternoon over the Islanders at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

Zegras scored two goals, including his first with the Flyers, to go along with an assist, while Christian Dvorak added two points (one goal, one assist).

The efforts from the offseason additions allowed the Flyers to erase deficits of 2-0 and 3-2. Zegras and Matvei Michkov then delivered the shootout tallies.

The Flyers (4-3-1) opened a five-game homestand and are now 4-1-0 at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

The Islanders (4-3-1) had their four-game winning streak snapped. The Flyers face New York three more times this season, with the next matchup Nov. 28 at UBS Arena.

• Samuel Ersson converted 23 saves on 26 shots after going eight days without a start.

“His attitude was unreal all week,” Tocchet said. “He’s practicing hard. Never complained.”

The 26-year-old denied two of three shots in the skills competition and made a brilliant glove stop in overtime to cover up a Flyers turnover.

After the Flyers tied the game at 2-2 in the third period on Zegras’ first goal, Maxim Tsyplakov got one on Ersson with a redirection near the doorstep. But Ersson later made a huge save after the Flyers tied it again on Zegras’ second goal, which was a power play marker.

On the Islanders’ 2-0 goal in the second period, Noah Juulsen’s pass went off one of the officials along the back boards. It took a favorable bounce for New York and Anthony Duclair ended up capitalizing on it.

Prior to Ersson’s outing, Dan Vladar earned three straight starts. In his first five games, Vladar has gone 3-2-0 with a 1.81 goals-against average and .932 save percentage.

The Flyers entered with the NHL’s fewest shots per game at 21.9. They put 26 on Ilya Sorokin and he stopped 23 of them.

The Islanders’ netminder came in with a 1.54 goals-against average and .947 save percentage lifetime against the Flyers.

• The Flyers’ power play allowed New York to strike first at shorthanded about midway through the opening stanza.

Rick Tocchet didn’t appear thrilled with Michkov, who sent a pass to Owen Tippett in coverage. It resulted in a turnover and the Islanders going the other way for a Simon Holmstrom goal.

Michkov hasn’t been super sharp from a playmaking perspective. But you have to accept that he’s going to be a daring passer. He’s going to try to make plays through tight windows.

It might not always work, but that can change quickly.

The Flyers saw that in the second period when Michkov found Zegras with a cross-ice pass to help set up Dvorak’s goal. Zegras’ primary assist was an excellent one and it rewarded Dvorak’s hard-working shift.

Jamie Drysdale, who played with Zegras when they were on the Ducks, has seen this kind of performance.

“I would say vintage Z,” Drysdale said, “but he has always got tricks up his sleeve, so I wouldn’t be surprised if you see more and more throughout the year.”

• The Flyers did a solid job containing Matthew Schaefer, the top overall pick in the 2025 draft.

The 18-year-old defenseman came in with seven points (two goals, five assists) over his first seven games. But the Flyers held him scoreless.

• Garnet Hathaway provided his usual energy in the first period. He delivered a good hit on Casey Cizikas and then had to fight Scott Mayfield, who wanted to defend his teammate.

Garnet Hathaway and Scott Mayfield squared off in the first period.

• The Flyers have two days before their next game Tuesday when they host the Penguins (6 p.m. ET/ESPN).
