Outside Climate Pledge Arena Saturday night, howling winds whipped freezing rain onto unlucky pedestrians. That was still nicer than the treatment afforded the Edmonton Oilers by the Seattle Kraken inside the arena, where a sellout crowd provided a far nicer version of howls.
Playing at home for the first time in 14 days, Seattle continued the spirited play that vanquished the high-flying Jets in Winnipeg on Thursday, and the powerhouse Vegas Golden Knights earlier this season. 1st and 3rd period goals by Jordan Eberle, sandwiching one by Tye Kartye, supported Joey Daccord’s 31-save effort in a 3-2 victory over perennial nemesis Edmonton.
Matty Beniers assisted on both Eberle goals, while Leon Draisaitl had two helpers for the Oilers.
The Kraken remain unbeaten at home, adding the Oilers to previous CPA victories against Anaheim and Vegas.
1st Period
The Oilers come in scoring 3.00 goals per game, and allowing 3.00 goals per game. The Kraken are scoring 2.75 goals per game, and allowing 2.75 goals per game. Enjoy this perfect symmetry of the universe while it lasts.
Not much in hockey is more scary for a defenseman than Connor McDavid bearing down 1-on-1. But not for Vince Dunn, who authoritatively shoves McDavid backward onto his wallet. Thus energized, captain Jordan Eberle cashes in a 2-on-1 after Matty Beniers’ pinpoint cross-ice feed. 1-0 Seattle at 1:23.
This game just starte…
SEATTLE KRAKEN GOAL!
Jordan Eberle gets things started with a beauty of a play and a beauty of a shot and just like that it’s 1-0 for the #SeaKraken pic.twitter.com/fMigAFIIkd

Despite some early puck bobbles, Kraken goalie Joey Daccord rejects testing shots in short order from Jack Roslovic and Leon Draisaitl. Later, he’d stone Roslovic a second time. Daccord had nine saves before the contestl was nine minutes old – though puck possession hasn’t been one-sided. The Kraken look as fast as the speedy Oilers – in fact, forcing Edmonton into three 1st period minors. None, however, resulted in a second Kraken goal.
2nd Period

USA Hockey legend – and member of your PWHL Seattle – Hilary Knight was the designated celebrity for the Kraken’s newest pre-opening faceoff gimmick.
She played it to the hilt, stopping the engine order telegraph at each increasing speed level and gesturing the amp up the crowd. Great showmanship! Or show-woman-ship!
The Kraken out-injured list remains at four: Kaapo Kakko, Freddy Gaudreau, Ryker Evans and Jared McCann. Defenseman Brandon Montour returned to the lineup Saturday after a four-game family leave absence. (Older brother Cameron Noble-Montour died Monday after losing a four-year battle with ALS.)
Early in the period, each member of Edmonton’s Emberson-Roslovic-Henrique line shoots on net within a five-second span. Daccord stops them all.
4th-line Kraken youth are served on the 2-0 goal at 6:35. Ryan Winterton (age 22) streaks down right wing. Linemate Tye Kartye (24) must have yelled for the puck, because Winterton sends a pass diagonally behind him. Kartye blasts over a diving Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner. Graybeard Ben Meyers (26!) draws the second assist.
That’s Kraken defensive teamwork, baby: Dunn sees defensive partner Adam Larsson has been caught flat-footed by an onrushing Issac Howard. Anticipating this, Dunn sprints down the middle of the ice to prevent what looked like a high-danger chance.
A power play rocket from the right circle by Evan Bouchard narrows the Edmonton deficit to 2-1 at 15:39.
3rd Period
Like in the 3rd period of their shutout in Winnipeg, the Kraken enter the final 20 nursing a one-goal lead. But just as in the ‘Peg, Seattle doesn’t turtle. In fact, they don’t allow a single Edmonton shot on goal for the first 7+ minutes of the period. If you’re looking for a Kraken improvement from last season, it’s a calmness protecting a lead.
With Edmonton defensemen in the o-zone pressing for the equalizer, there was no one back to defend when Beniers fed a lead pass his linemate and team captain. With time to pick his spot, Eberle blasted from the top of the right circle, pinpointing a laser under the crossbar and inside the far left post. 3-1 Seattle at 12:11, Eberle’s 4th of the season.
O Captain My Captain! Seattle’s quick strike turn-defense-to-offense does it for the third time this game and it’s Jordan Eberle who gives the #SeaKraken a 3-1 lead! pic.twitter.com/NPN3GZintz

The Oilers got that one back in a hurry on a bad-luck deflection with 5:25 left. Darnell Nurse shot from the right point, with Mason Marchment getting his stick in the path of the shot. Unfortunately for the Kraken, that deflection fooled Daccord to narrow the Oilers deficit to 3-2.
Edmonton pulled goalie Skinner for a sixth attacker with 1:40 left. Eberle missed a rink-length hat trick by inches. Jaden Schwartz made a key block in the dying seconds. Vince Dunn was felled making another block at the horn, but must have felt better when his goalie came out to give him a thank-you bear hug.
Up Next
In a remarkably quirky bit of scheduling, the Kraken CONCLUDE their season series with the Montreal Canadiens before the campaign is a month old. On Tuesday at CPA, Seattle will attempt to avenge a 5-4 overtime loss to the Habs in Montreal on Oct. 14. The only way the two clubs could meet again in 2025-26 would be in the Stanley Cup Final.
