The Pittsburgh Penguins suffered a 5-4 shootout loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets last night. They lost forward Rickard Rakell as he underwent surgery on his left hand. His expected recovery time is six to eight weeks. They recalled forward Ville Koivunen from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL. Koivunen scored the overtime winner for the Penguins last night over the Checkers 3-2 in overtime.

Rickard Rakell

Rakell has eight points in nine games this season on three goals and five assists. He is a plus-one with a power-play goal. He’s appeared in 811 career games between the Penguins and Anaheim Ducks. Rakell has 527 career points on 239 goals and 288 assists. He’s a career -38 with 58 power-play goals and 33 game-winning goals. Rakell’s played in 261 games during his Pittsburgh tenure. He’s recorded 188 points on 85 goals and 103 assists. Rakell is a -15 with 25 power-play goals and six game-winning goals.

Ville Koivunen

Koivunen played in two games for the Penguins this season but didn’t record a point. In six games this season in the AHL, he has 11 points, including four goals and seven assists. He’s a plus-five with two game-winning goals. Koivunen has played in 81 AHL games over three seasons with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and the Chicago Wolves recording 68 points on 26 goals and 42 assists. He’s a plus-four with four power-play goals and four game-winning goals. In ten career games with the Penguins, Koivunen has seven assists, and he’s an even in plus/minus.
