The hockey world reacted quick on Sunday when it was announced the NHL had suspended Washington Capitals assistant coach Mitch Love for the entire 2025-26 season after an investigation into the situation.
News was broken by NHL Insider Frank Seravalli on X:
According to Seravalli, the individual involved in the matter reported the incident directly to the NHL, the Capitals, as well as the other teams that Love was interviewing for regarding vacant head coaching positions.
We reported earlier on this summer that Love was potentially in talks with the Seattle Kraken for their vacant head coaching job, which was later filled by former Toronto Maple Leafs assistant coach Lane Lambert. The Capitals placed Love on leave pending an investigation on Sept. 14, and it took only merely a month for the the league concluded its review and issued the suspension.
There is no indication of whether or not the Capitals are going to look into terminating the contract of Love.
There was a bright future at one point for Love, who was the former coach of the Calgary Flames’ AHL affiliate from 2021-2023, then signing as a defensive assistant with the Capitals in the summer of 2023.
Washington has not yet given a statement on the matter, although when and if the team does put out an update, we will be sure to inform you.
This is a breaking story. More details to follow.
