Inello’s hat trick helps lift Ursuline past Suffern
NEW ROCHELLE — Sophomore Mary Inello, playing her first year on the Ursuline varsity field hockey team, scored three times to help lift the No. 4-seed Koalas to an opening-round 5-2 win over visiting No. 5 Suffern in the Section 1 Class A tournament’s opening round.
Ursuline had edged the Mounties 3-2 during the regular season and after Inello scored off a penalty corner after time had expired in the third quarter, Ursuline carried that same lead until 4:16 was left in the game. That’s when Inello finished her hat trick, scoring an insurance goal off a fine left-to-right feed by Cat DeAngelis.
What it means
The loss dropped Suffern to 7-8-1 and ended its season.
The win boosted Ursuline to 11-6 on the season.
But coming up with win No. 12 will, in all likelihood, prove very difficult.
Ursuline will travel to No. 1-seed Mamaroneck for a quarterfinal game Tuesday. Mamaroneck, which won state Class A titles each of the past two years, is undefeated this season against Section 1 opponents and routed the Koalas 11-0 Sept. 3 in both teams’ season opener.
Player of the game
Friday, the focus was on Ursuline’s win and its young, key contributor.
Inello’s biggest goal was her second.
As with her first, which occurred five minutes into the game and put Ursuline up 1-0, she scored off an assist from Tierney Baumann.
This time, her goal followed two fine diving saves by Suffern senior goalie Marissa Goodman off the same penalty corner.
But Goodman couldn’t be everywhere and when the second rebound came out to Baumann, Baumann smartly fired on net and Inello deflected the ball in.
Game stats
Ursuline went into halftime with a 2-1 lead after dominating much of the first and second quarter.
Winnie Mancini scored its second goal with 4;12 left in the hallf.
DeAngelis wrapped up the Koalas’ scoring with 2:37 left in the game, carrying the ball in and ripping a shot home for an unassisted goal.
Liv Smith was part of both Suffern goals. She scored off a Nevin Sullivan assist with 2:48 left in the first half and had the assist as Nicole DeBellis tied the score at 2-2 off a penalty corner with 10 minutes left in the third quarter.
Holding on to its 3-2 lead a little more than halfway through the third quarter, Ursuline survived multiple Suffern penalty corners over a three-minute span.
Koalas keeper Peyton Savarese, who had six stops, made a couple of good saves, including on Smith, Koala defenders stopped two shots — one by Baumann — and a good scoring chance hit the left side of the cage.
Just a little bit more than a minute later, Inello scored to put her team up 4-2.
Goodman kept her team in the game, registering 13 saves.
They said it
Suffern coach Brianna Witt said her team was hurt by its slow start.
“It wasn’t our best game,” she said.
She described Inello’s go-ahead goal leading into the fourth quarter as a “momentum killer.”
Inello, who, caught up in the frenzy of the ball bouncing around in traffic, had to be told by teammates that she had scored what proved to be the winning goal, attributed her goals to “kind of just instinct,” saying her team had worked on its shots off passes and she’d scored off good feeds.
“It definitely gave us a lot more confidence and everyone was happy, so we just kept playing and spirits were high,” she said of her goal at the end of the third quarter.
