TAMPA, Fla.—Carl Lindbom did all he could to give the Vegas Golden Knights a win, but the team in front of him had no such luck.

On Sunday, the Golden Knights escaped with a point against the Tampa Bay Lightning, but could not close out in a 2-1 overtime loss.

The game did not get off to the most pleasant of starts for the Golden Knights. Less than five minutes into the first period, Lightning forward Brandon Hagel beat Zach Whitecloud in front of the net to fire the puck past Lindbom to get Tampa Bay on the board first.

However, momentum came the way of the Golden Knights after they killed a double minor penalty on Alexander Holtz. The PK units were sharp for the four minutes, and Lindbom made a good save on Oliver Bjorkstand to keep the game at a one-goal deficit.

Using the successful kill as a springboard, the Golden Knights finally got themselves on the board during the road trip. As they have done often in the past, William Karlsson and Reilly Smith found their way into the offensive zone, with Karlsson beating Andrei Vasilevskiy on the glove side to tie the game at one goal apiece.

The second period was arguably the worst the Golden Knights have played thus far this season, only getting two shots in the middle frame and playing most of that 20 minutes in the defensive zone.

Despite being under siege, Lindbom continued to shine. His best sequence came during another penalty, when Lindbom had to make four saves against the Lightning’s top power play unit. Massive saves on Nikita Kucherov and Jake Guentzel ensured that the Golden Knights escaped the onslaught with the game still tied.

The third period continued with the quiet offense, and things looked dire when Kucherov was able to cut in front of the net and get what was the Lightning’s second goal of the game. However, the Golden Knights challenged the ruling, and video review revealed that Kucherov went offsides on himself when bringing the puck into the zone. The officials waved the goal off, and the Golden Knights survived a close call to guarantee a point.

Unfortunately, poor puck management reared its ugly head at the worst time, when Shea Theodore turned the puck over early in overtime. Just 32 seconds in overtime, Kucherov finished an odd-man rush to earn his goal.

Lindbom was excellent in his NHL debut, making 26 of 28 saves. Unfortunately, he comes away with a hard-luck loss.

The Golden Knights get one more crack to come out of the road trip with a victory when they face the Carolina Hurricanes on Oct. 28.
