Some Toronto Maple Leafs fans are toying with the idea of trading for Carolina Hurricanes forward Andrei Svechnikov and it’s led to a lot of debate.
Although the team has done fairly well for themselves to add the right players to work by committee, the Toronto Maple Leafs are still figuring out how to best implement this new lineup of fresh faces.
It’s going to take time, and we have already seen the benefits of things over the last couple of games, so once the injured players come back, it’s going to finally give the team the lineup they envisioned.
Why Maple Leafs Fans Are Suddenly Talking About Andrei Svechnikov
But they can make it even better, and while they have some options at their disposal, some Maple Leafs fans are discussing adding a star forward who hasn’t exactly found his footing yet.
Down south in Carolina, there’s a lot of concern that forward Andrei Svechnikov isn’t performing up to his standards, and with zero points and a minus-3 rating in 8 games that concern may be valid.
However, the Leaf fans aren’t too concerned about his slow start with the Hurricanes, and might be very interested in bringing him in:
Some fans also think that perhaps Svechnikov and head coach Rod Brind’Amour have fallen out, and given he is playing the least amount of time since his rookie year, and stuck on the third line; he might be losing his spot.
There’s no denying that Svechnikov has been as consistent as reliable as can be, with 364 points in 486 games (151 goals, 213 assists) although there are some injury concerns (but at this point, who doesn’t have some on Toronto?)
Plus he’s the perfect Brad Treliving-type player who is uber-physical (averaging over 120 hits for his career) but not completely reckless and can chip in on special teams, and play anywhere in the lineup.
Having no points is a tough sell for fans, but it may make it easier to actually acquire him considering the worse he plays, the more Carolina would likely want to cut ties.
He could slide in to the top-nine with no issues, and will provide the team with someone who has a decent amount of production in the playoffs as well (48 points in 66 games).
Toronto could certainly use someone like Andrei Svechnikov to help improve their roster, and give them that push to get past some of their toughest battles, though it might end up costing them a key piece of their future like Ben Danford or even Easton Cowan.
The first task at hand though, is finding the right assets and time to bring him in and Brad Treliving must find the way to do it.
