Dylan Larkin reached a milestone Tuesday night as the Red Wings began a five-game road trip with a 5-2 win at St. Louis.
The win lifted the Wings to 7-3 on the young season.
Larkin scored twice for the Wings, giving him 250 for his career, and added an assist, continuing a hot start to the season.
“I’m just just playing with good players, and everyone’s clicking, you know?” Larkin said. “And I think we’ve had different heroes every night, and every time we won it’s a different story.”
Tuesday’s story got off to a slow start, when St. Louis captain Brayden Schenn scored just 47 seconds into the game. But goalie John Gibson, who went on to stop 20 of 22 shots on the night, wasn’t concerned.
“I don’t really think there’s anything to get worked up about,” he said. “It’s gonna happen. So nothing anybody else could do. They got a good bounce and we got a good bounce right after.”
Larkin said the Wings picked up their play after Travis Harmonic and Schenn got into a fight near the middle of the period.
‘That got us going,” Larkin said. “It was unbelievable to see him step up and get us into it.”
Ben Chiarot tied the game at the 121:01 mark, and Alex DeBrincat gave the Wings the lead for good by scoring with 36 seconds left in the period.
Larkin Gets On Scoreboard
Larkin made it 3-1 midway through the second period and Elmer Soderblom scored less than two minutes later to make it 4-1.
Jordan Kyrou scored for St, Louis late in the third period to make it 4-2, but Larkin put the game out of reach with an empty-net goal with just over a minute left.
It was the second win in a row for the Wings, who beat the Blues 6-4 on Friday, and the fifth loss in a row for St Louis.
Tuesday’s win was the result of solid practices the previous two days, according to coach Todd McLellan.
“We spent two full practices really working on our end up ice responsibilities, and we saw massive improvements,” he said,”So those practices were valuable. The players paid attention. They applied the you know, the lesson, if you will, in the game. Now, can we maintain it? Can we keep doing it? We’ll see when we get to California.”
The Wings will take on Los Angeles on Thursday and Anaheim on Friday..
