Craig Berube’s tenure in Toronto hasn’t been too successful thus far, and now there’s doubts over his fit after the team have started slow in 2025/26.

Last summer, the Toronto Maple Leafs signed Stanley Cup winning Head Coach Craig Berube to replace Sheldon Keefe, with hopes that he could finally take this team over the top.

However, the team once again fell in the second round of the post-season, and after some changes this summer, the team just don’t quite look as dangerous as they have in years gone by.

The Athletic Question Berube’s Role With Toronto

Now, The Athletic have called into question Berube’s ability as this team’s Head Coach, calling out their expected goal percentage dropping over 8% since his arrival as the reason why, with the team now at 5-4-1 on the season as they simply don’t look the same as they once did.Part of that is the loss of Mitch Marner, who was a 100-point player last season for Toronto, but with the style that Berube employs, this team has seemingly taken a major step back on the offensive end. With young guys like Matthew Knies stepping up, the hope is that Auston Matthews can get his team back and lead them to plenty of success, but as of right now, the team simply aren’t as dominant as they were in regular seasons gone by.

At the end of the day, analytics aren’t the be all, end all for a Head Coach in the NHL, but the numbers for Berube are not flattering in the slightest, and while there’s a chance this team can find their groove, as of right now, things simply don’t look as good as the organization hoped when they signed him 18 months ago.
