If there’s one thing fans and coaches love, it’s accountability, and with Simon Edvinsson‘s latest statement, he’s owned his failures.

In order to grow, you have to admit that you were wrong and take a different path after making a mistake. For players and skilled tradespeople, it’s all about doing the right thing 100 times.

It’s also about owning your mistakes so you can be accountable and grow, so when the time comes to impart wisdom, you have a map of how things went for others to learn from.

Even with a 7-3 start to the season and a 5-2 defeat of the St. Louis Blues.

The Swedish-born defenseman has a brutally honest opinion of his play lately. It’s been the worst of his career.

«The last two games, I’ve probably played my worst hockey that I’ve (played) in four years, or that I can remember, at least,» Edvinsson said on Oct. 26. «So, that’s all I’ve got to say because I can’t speak of the team’s performance. I was probably one of the worst players on the ice in both of those games.»

Simon Edvinsson’s 2025-26 Season is Still Impressive

In 10 games this season, he’s scored 4 points (1-3) for the Red Wings and plays alongside Moritz Seider.Despite the top billing in the lineup, he feels like he hasn’t been playing up to his own expectations. Despite the -2, Edvinsson has found a way to dig himself out of his hole and be an impact player.

«I think the sky’s the limit for him,» Lashoff concluded. «Just as a defender, for being that age and playing the minutes he did against tough competition, it’s impressive what he did, and now it’s on him to kind of pull himself to that standard as well and continue to grow and keep pushing the bar as high as he can, year after year, which he certainly has the potential to do.»

Growing pains for Edvinsson are temporary, and prospects deal with the downswings all the time.

What matters is how you dig yourself out of the hole.
