Patrick Kane Remains Out, Detroit Red Wings Recall Forward from Grand Rapids

Keegan Bezenah – Inside The Rink

The Detroit Red Wings start their West Coast road trip tonight against the Los Angeles Kings. They already started their five-game road trip on Tuesday with a 5-2 win over the Blues. They’ve won back-to-back games over the Blues; now, heading West is a big trip for these Red Wings. Last season, the West Coast trip was one of the lowest parts of their season and ultimately killed morale. This season, they enter the road trip looking like a different team, but they’ve been without winger Patrick Kane, who hasn’t played since October 17th against the Lightning. Kane is dealing with an upper-body injury. Kane won’t play tonight against the Kings or tomorrow against the Ducks. The Red Wings currently only have 12 forwards on the active roster, leading to them recalling forward Austin Watson today from Grand Rapids of the AHL. Watson, this season in four games with the Griffins, has two goals, is a plus-one, and has a game-winning goal.

The 33-year-old forward spent last season in the Red Wings organization, playing in 60 games with the Griffins, recording 42 points on 19 goals and 23 assists. He was a plus-ten with seven power-play goals, three shorthanded goals, and two game-winning goals. In 13 games for the Red Wings last season, he scored three goals and finished as a plus-one. He’s also spent time in the AHL with the Milwaukee Admirals and in the NHL with the Nashville Predators, Ottawa Senators, and Tampa Bay Lightning.
