Veteran forward and former Maple Leafs captain John Tavares was not up for celebrating his 500th career goal, revealing why that is to reporters after the team’s 6-3 loss in Columbus.
On a night where the Leafs should have been celebrating a milestone moment for John Tavares, instead, the mood was very low after dropping a decision to a very beatable opponent in the Columbus Blue Jackets.
A Classy Gesture From The Blue Jackets
Tavares scored his 500th goal to cut into the Blue Jackets’ 6-1 lead at the time, and even though he appeared as though the play might have been offside, coach Dean Evason and his video crew opted not to challenge the goal in a classy gesture to give Tavares his moment in a blowout game.
Mood Dampened By Loss, Says Tavares
After the game, Tavares spoke with reporters, revealing why he didn’t have much to say about his milestone night, alluding to the team’s performance as having put a bit of a damper on the mood.
“It’s really hard to comment on it right now. I understand the question, but you play this game to win as a team. It’s all about the team, and you’d like to have it make more of an impact in the game. For sure in the moments ahead and the days ahead, I’ll appreciate it more.”
The Leafs will have a couple of days to stew on this one, as their next game on the schedule does not appear until Saturday, when they travel to Philadelphia to meet the Flyers, who are currently 5-3-1 on the season and riding a 2-game win streak.
