Detroit Red Wings on ‘strange game’ in win in L.A.

LOS ANGELES — Special teams got a workout as the Detroit Red Wings knocked off their first leg in California.
The game against the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday, Oct. 30, at Crypto.com Arena had a wild finish, with the Kings scoring two goals 40 seconds apart to send it into overtime. Lucas Raymond scored in the shootout to earn the Wings a 4-3 victory, their third straight.
Marco Kasper scored his second of the game with around five minutes to play when he connected on Mason Appleton’s attempt to score off Alex DeBrincat’s pass. Corey Perry scored twice after the Kings had pulled their goalie for the extra attacker.
Simon Edvinsson took a slashing penalty with 2:02 left in overtime, leaving the Wings (8-3-0) shorthanded. Kevin Fiala scored in the final minute of OT, but it was waived off for goalie interference.
Slow start till the second period
DeBrincat and Kasper scored on power plays in the second period. The Wings’ power play had some dicey moments, too, like when Moritz Seider’s careless move led to Byfield testing Cam Talbot on a breakaway.
It was a busy first period for Talbot as the Kings were far more adept whipping the puck around Detroit’s zone than the Wings breaking out. Even a power play didn’t generate much in the way of scoring chances, with Emmitt Finnie the only one to force a save from Darcy Kuemper. The Wings gained a bit of pace later in the period, but shots after the first favored the home team, 10-6.
The second period was livelier, thanks to the Wings’ power play. It gave up a goal 11 seconds after a penalty to Kevin Fiala, when Alex Laferriere took a pass from Byfield, took off past Finnie and scored on a backhand, making it 1-0 at 12:39 of the second period. But the Wings countered that goal within a minute, converting when DeBrincat one-timed Raymond’s perfect pass.

Another power play yielded a lead, when Kasper batted the puck out of the air on Axel Sandin Pellikka’s shot, at 15:46 of the second period.
Back-to-back penalties to Elmer Söderblom and Andrew Copp, with 10 seconds of overlap left the Wings shorthanded early in the third period.
