Following a disappointing overtime loss in Game 4 to the Ottawa Senators, the Leafs provided an update on John Tavares following his injury scare. The hit forced Tavares to leave the extra period for what many suspect as concussion protocol. Unfortunately for the Leafs, moments later they got a four-minute power play and had to substitute Morgan Rielly onto the top unit in Tavares’ absence.
Losing Tavares at such a critical point, particularly when the five-forward power play unit had been so dominant, ultimately cost the Leafs the sweep.
Following the game, Leafs head coach Craig Berube did not seem overly concerned about Tavares’ availability.
“I don’t think there is any concern. He had to go off.”
In speaking with reporters following the game, many of the Leafs that were asked about the hit said they did not see it. Nylander, like Berube, also said he doesn’t see any concern over Tavares’ availability for Game 5, given that he returned in OT of Game 4.
Despite the rest of the team being asked about the hit, Tavares was not made available to the media following the game.
There likely won’t be a further update on Tavares until the Leafs return to practice on Monday before Game 5 on Tuesday night.
