The Detroit Red Wings game didn’t go off without a hitch, as referee Wes McCauley is under fire for a controversial call involving Moritz Seider.

Referee Wes McCauley has been one of the NHL’s exciting personalities. Adding humor to his calls gives the games a lighthearted feel in the midst of serious competition.

However, last night’s game with the Anaheim Ducks resulted in a call by the officials and McCauley, which influenced the game. The NHL and the officials are under fire from fans.

The controversial call would occur in the 2nd period involving defenseman Moritz Seider, after what was thought to be a goal.

Seider would capitalize on a juicy rebound and tap it into the net after gaining possession of the puck with his stick. However, McCauley and company would call it back.

“After review of the play it was determined that the puck was kicked in the net, therefore there is no goal,” announced McCauley.

The momentum would be lost at this moment here for the Red Wings.

The Detroit Red Wings’ Final Score Influenced by Wes McCauley’s Call

While the goal would be overturned, the notion that the puck was kicked in seems dishonest.

“A closer look at the video replay shows that Seider fanned on the puck with his stick, twice in fact, never making contact again after the puck had bounced of his skate. In spite of that it was clear that many felt the video did not show enough to overturn what had initially been ruled a good goal, with most arguing that Seider had not kicked the puck but merely deflected it with the blade of his skate.”

Some offered other theories of why the goal was overturned, and with legalized sports gambling being a thing, well, who can blame them?

The NHL released the determination as to why Seider’s goal wasn’t good:

“Video review determined that Detroit’s Moritz Seider kicked the puck into the Anaheim net. According to Rule 49.2, “A goal cannot be scored by an attacking player who uses a distinct kicking motion to propel the puck into the net with his skate/foot.”

It seems like a complete misapplication of the rule here, considering that Seider’s foot never left the ice or made a kicking motion.

This is just another case of a referee going viral for all the wrong reasons during a Red Wings game.
