If an NHL team cannot succeed 5v5 there is no chance they will succeed, and the Vancouver Canucks have one of the lowest expected goals percentages at 5v5 in the entire league.
“The number of injuried players on the team’s roster jumped up to nine on Thursday night as Brock Boeser was forced to leave their game against the St. Louis Blues after taking a shot to the midsection from defenseman Marcus Pettersson.”-Jaxon
Canucks bottom out in 5v5 expected goals amongst the entire NHL.
Taj1944 on X posted in sarcastic fashion just how bad the Canucks are at even strength. The team ranks second to last in the NHL, and it will not get any better considering how many injuries they have.
When you look at the other teams in the NHL that are Stanley Cup contenders, like the Colorado Avalanche who are 60% expected goals 5v5, a 17% difference is incomprehensible , and unacceptable for the Canucks. When it’s combined with a bottom third power play, the Canucks are on their way to a lottery pick at this point. They have no chance at winning games consistently, with a power play percentage at a mere 16,67%.
The only bright side for the Canucks, is the teams in their division aren’t doing very well 5v5 either. The only reason the Edmonton Oilers are winning any games right now is because their power play is over 30%, which is not sustainable for an 82 game season, but their roster is built to score and they always start slow. The Canucks do not have the roster to pucks in the back of the net, and unless something drastic changes, they are on their way to a miserable season.
