Detroit Red Wings prospect Eddie Genborg was enticed to join Timrå of the Swedish Hockey League for this season because he was intrigued with the notion of playing for NHL legend Olli Jokinen.

That didn’t happen, but what did happen is that Genborg is scoring like Jokinen.

Genborg admits that his move from Linköping to Timrå was sparked by the fact that Jokinen was coaching in Timrå. However, shortly after Genborg was making the move, Jokinen was also on the move. He would return to his native Finland to coach HIFK.

“At first it was a bit for Jokinen’s sake,” Genborg admitted to Swedish Hockey News about his decision to change clubs. “Then he left quite close behind, and then I didn’t really know what was going on.

“But then Tommy (Samuelsson) came in (as Timrå coach), and it has worked out really well. I’m happy and really enjoying it.”

Perhaps not as much as Timrå is enjoying Genborg’s presence. He’s scored seven goals already this season. That’s second among teenagers who are playing in the SHL.

Skating on Timrå’s top forward line with former NHLer Jonathan Dahlen and SHL veteran Emil Pettersson, Genborg is second on the team in scoring. He’s showing 7-6-13 totals through 18 games.

Genborg, Detroit’s 40th overall pick in the 2025 NHL entry draft, is also the one providing the muscle on the unit for his more experienced linemates.

“It feels good,” Genborg said. “They are really skilled players, and I have had to struggle a little more physically, while they can play on their skill. But it has worked well.”

Red Wings Pick Bulked Up To Step Up

Most young draftees find that the element they are lacking when they move to North American pro hockey is physical strength. Genborg appears to be trending ahead of that curve. He spent his summer hitting the gym, devoting his summer to strength training.

“I have prepared myself a lot physically, trying to get stronger,” Genborg said. “There are many matches and tougher opposition now than in (junior).

“During the summer, I have really just tried to build as much muscle as possible to feel stronger.”
