Washington Capitals winger Pierre-Luc Dubois, who suffered a lower-body injury during a game against the New York Islanders on Friday, will miss an “extended period of time,” coach Spencer Carbery told reporters on Monday. It is not yet known if Dubois will require surgery, Carbery said.

Pierre-Luc Dubois (lower body) is going to be out for an “extended period of time,” Spencer Carbery says. Dubois is still being evaluated, they’re not saying yet if he’ll need surgery. But will be out for a while.

Dubois was injured during the first period of the Capitals’ home loss to the Islanders. His legs buckled after he took a faceoff against Jean-Gabriel Pageau, whose weight came down on Dubois. Favoring his right leg, Dubois was helped to the dressing room, and the Capitals said he sustained an unspecified lower-body injury.

Dubois was playing in only his sixth game, after he missed five games earlier due to an upper-body injury. He had yet to record a point for the Capitals after scoring 20 goals and 66 points in 82 games last season — his first season with Washington. Dubois’ point total was tied for third-best on the team last season.

This season, the Capitals are off to a relatively slow start, with a 6-5-1 record. They have scored a total of 31 goals, tied for second-fewest in the NHL entering Monday.
