TORONTO — Monday trade rumors are never the best, but the Edmonton Oilers are trying to find takers for a couple of their defensemen. The Steven Stamkos trade chatter is beginning to pick up, which usually means people are talking. The Calgary Flames stood firm with their struggling teenage defenseman and are going to keep him around, and we examined is the Pittsburgh Penguins are whistling past the graveyard.
My, how things could have been different. I greatly enjoyed my nights in Winnipeg watching the World Series games. I’m quite glad the road trips weren’t reversed, and I wasn’t in LA for the series.
The first news reel I saw about the “celebrations”, which were quite destructive, was about the “celebrations” taking place right in front of the little hotel where I stayed in LA. Yikes.
Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Problem, trend, or ignore it? The Penguins have been outshot in all but four games. Outchanced in all but five games, but … there is a twist. So, is it something to worry about, or shrug off? Erik Karlsson gave us some good counterarguments in our latest Penguins analysis.
Also in Penguins land, the NHL wasn’t thrilled with Evgeni Malkin’s slash late in the first period. Refs gave him two minutes, the NHL took some cash. Here’s the Penguins news.
Steelers Now: Well, who saw THAT coming? The Steelers dominated the Indianapolis Colts. We’ve got all of the locker room news and analysis, and the big Steelers win.

NHL Rumors, News, & National Hockey Now
Edmonton Journal: The Oilers are looking for a “soft landing” for Troy Stecher as they overloaded their blue line and are looking for a trade.
Sportsnet Calgary: The same debate happening in Pittsburgh was happening in Calgary. Flames GM Craig Conroy stood firm and kept his young defenseman, struggles and all.
Sportsnet Toronto: Chris Tanev was discharged from the hospital and returned home. After a scary moment Saturday, he’s already on the mend.
And Steve Stamkos. Trade rumors incoming:
Philly Hockey Now: We are now to the point of the season when injuries start to mount. Tyson Foerster is banged up. Rick Tocchet gave a positive update, but the Philadelphia Flyers are holding their breath.
NY Post: Matthew Schaefer was the NHL’s rookie of the month. He scored a pair of big goals Saturday and broke a record for the youngest multi-goal scorer in NHL history, which was previously held by Bobby Orr. Things are coming up roses for the first overall pick.
Forever Blueshirts: It’s not easy when you’re in the spotlight for contract talks and trade rumors. Ryan Callahan was a popular figure with the Rangers in 2013-14, but contract talks dragged on, and he was eventually traded for Martin St. Louis. On a recent podcast, he detailed what a nightmare year it was with the New York Rangers.
Detroit Hockey Now: It’s a youth movement that is being celebrated in Detroit, but Sunday, the old guys showed up, and the Detroit Red Wings were rocking.
It’s funny how the older players raise their game with the kids are around, eh?
