The Boston Bruins took a chance on a first-round draft pick from 2016, and it is beginning to pay dividends. Riley Tufte was signed to a one-year contract before the 2024-25 season and played six games in Boston. In Providence, Tufte scored 21 goals and collected 21 assists in 58 games, and added four goals and two assists in eight playoff games. That was enough to get the 25th overall pick in 2016, another one-year deal from Boston

Tufte has carried that momentum on to a blistering pace to start the 2025-26 season. The 6-foot-6, 235-pound forward has tallied seven goals with seven assists in nine games to lead the American Hockey League. Tufte’s plus-12 also leads the league. On a team with prospects Matt Poitras, Fabian Lysell, and Georgii Merkulov, Tufte has shone the brightest.

At 27 years old, it is hard to place exactly where Tufte’s potential lies. At one point, the big winger was projected to be a legitimate NHL prospect, and he still might be. Now, it is just a matter of where Tufte fits in Boston’s plans. If there is not a shot to be had, then another stellar season in the AHL should get the Coon Rapids, Minnesota native a chance in another organization next season.
