John Leonard was named the first star with two goals in Sunday’s 6-2 win over Rockford in Grand Rapids.
Winger John Leonard is off to a fast start with the record-setting Grand Rapids Griffins.
Signed to a one-year contract in the offseason by the Detroit Red Wings, Leonard leads the AHL with nine goals, including two goals in Sunday’s 6-2 win over the Rockford IceHogs.
“I think it starts with the coaching staff and the team that management’s assembled so far,” Leonard said. “I think we’re a very deep team. We’ve got really good goaltending.
“Special teams have been really good. We’re a pretty tight group to be under 10 games in, so I think that kind of translates really well and we’ve got a pretty tight-knit group.”
“I’ve been playing a ton with Wombo (Amadeus Lombardi) and Shiner (Dominik Shine) and they’re two really fun guys to play with. Wombo’s obviously a really good passer and Shiner can kind of do a mix of everything, so it’s been a lot of fun so far.”
The Griffins extended their unbeaten streak to eight games, the best start in the league since 2021-2022.
Grand Rapids has a week off and will return to action against the Toronto Marlies at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids on Nov. 12 at 11 a.m.
