A National Hockey League insider has given a hint as to what salary Kiefer Sherwood could be looking at, on the low end, when he eventually signs his next contract. The Vancouver Canucks are going to have a pretty big decision to make in the coming months regarding pending unrestricted free agent forward Kiefer Sherwood, who they held preliminary discussions with about a contract extension in the offseason.

Rather than signing right away and in order to maximize his potential earnings, Sherwood decided to head into the 2025-26 season as a pending free agent and so far, it’s playing into his favour as he leads the Canucks with nine goals in 14 games, but with his strong start also comes a bit of worry on Vancouver’s side of things.

Due to his strong start, combined with his career-year in 2024-25, the Canucks are reportedly hesitant to sign him to a contract extension as it could cost them more than they’re willing to pay and over the weekend, an NHL insider revealed what Sherwood’s new deal could pay him on the low end.

NHL insider shares what Kiefer Sherwood’s salary could look like on low end on next contract

During an appearance on Hello Hockey on Saturday, National Hockey League insider David Pagnotta shared that he believes Kiefer Sherwood won’t be getting anything lower than $4 million annually on his next contract, whether it be in Vancouver or elsewhere.

“I don’t see this deal being anywhere below $4m [AAV]” Pagnotta said.

Whether it’s $4 million, $4.5 or $5+ million, it’s going to be a massive jump over the $1.5 million the Columbus, Ohio native is currently earning and a payday that he’s certainly earned thanks to his strong play since the start of the 2024-25 season.

So far this year, Sherwood has nine goals, 12 penalty minutes and is a minus-five, while leading the National Hockey League in hits with 63 through 14 games.

While Sherwood’s goal scoring is likely to drop off significantly as the season continues, especially given that a 52-53 goal pace unrealistic, there’s no doubt that he’ll set a new career high when all is said and done in April, which will help increase those odds of getting north of $4-$4.5 million on his next contract.
