The Boston Bruins seemed to go off the board in last year’s draft by selecting Czech defenseman Vashek Blanar in the fourth round. It turns out that Vashek changed his last name, but it was still a reach at the time for Boston. Fast forward a few months, and that “reach” is progressing well.

Blanar has three goals and five assists in 13 games for HV71 in the U20 Nationell in Sweden, and collected a goal and 2 assists last Friday. Two of his points came on the power play in a 4-3 loss. Blanar was a minus-1 the next day in a 5-1 loss.

Despite his team’s struggles, Blanar has been a bright spot, which has earned him a roster spot with Czechia in the upcoming Five Nations Tournament, which begins Thursday. The Czech defenseman is the youngest defenseman in the tournament and will be able to compete against the top U20 talent in the world. This tournament is a precursor to the U20 World Championship this winter.

Blanar is ranked 29th on the Bruins Benders Prospect Rankings, which ranks the top 30 Bruins prospects. Blanar is a 6-foot-5, 195-pound blueliner who doesn’t turn 19 until April.
