St. Louis Blues forward Pius Suter is making the Vancouver Canucks regret their decision to not re-sign him this summer after a solid start to the 2025-26 season.Heading into the offseason, Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin had some tough decisions to make with a handful of the team’s pending unrestricted free agents including Brock Boeser, Pius Suter and Derek Forbort.Vancouver managed to get Boeser and Forbort locked up, but couldn’t manage to find common ground on a new deal with Pius Suter and now, it’s coming back to bite the team, especially as they deal with several injury issues to their forward group.
“The solution for centre might be the guy who is already there. The Canucks didn’t like Suter’s number at the deadline but they might have to look at those numbers again. I am curious to see what happens there.” Friedman said according to Rick Dhaliwal back in April.

One day after the National Hockey League’s free agency window opened, Pius Suter found his new home, inking a two-year deal with the St. Louis Blues.”He had obviously a very good offensive year, his best goal-scoring year, but we think that he can come in here and provide us depth at the center ice position. He and (Nick) Bjugstad (signed Tuesday) certainly change our center ice complexion. (We) have five natural centers now with (Brayden) Schenn there and [Oskar Sundqvist], so there’s going to be some options and it’s always easier to move a centerman over to wing than a wing to center. We like our depth there and we think he can play with (Dylan) Holloway and (Jordan) Kyrou if that’s what the coach wants to do. He’s very versatile and it’s going to give us some options and the coach some options during training camp.” Blues General Manager Doug Armstrong said about the signing.
The Zurich, Switzerland native has fit very nicely in St. Louis, playing a second line role behind Robert Thomas and so far this season, has put up eight points (five goals, three assists), which includes a late winner on Monday night against the Edmonton Oilers.”Pius Suter:
– 5 Goals
– 8 Points
– 13 Games
– 46P in 81GP last year
– Consistently some of the best defensive analytics in the NHL
Still crazy at 29 years old this dude only got a 2×4.125M.” Mike Bartner said on X.
It’s safe to say that the Vancouver Canucks probably should’ve stepped up to give Suter the $4.125 million that he ended up getting from the St. Louis Blues, especially after the season he had in 2024-25, their center depth and the unpredictability surrounding Filip Chytil due to his injury issues.
We’ll have to wait and see how the rest of Pius Suter’s season goes, whether he continues his strong play or fizzles out a bit, before we can fully evaluate if the Vancouver Canucks made a mistake by not re-signing him.
