One of the Calgary Flames’ most exciting prospects is done for the year.
On Monday afternoon, Michigan Daily reporter Matthew Auchincloss revealed that 19-year-old blueliner Henry Mews is out for the season.
It’s a big loss for the University of Michigan Wolverines and will be a source of concern for the Flames, who selected Mews in the third round, 74th overall, of the 2024 NHL Draft.
In the time since, Mews has only gotten better and made the pick look like it could wind up being a steal.
Mews finished second in assists among OHL defencemen last year, behind the Flames’ own Zayne Parekh, after notching 14 goals and 68 helpers in a season split between the Ottawa 67’s and Sudbury Wolves. He’s a high-end puck-mover with big upside.
After finishing his junior season, Mews committed to the Wolverines, where he’s been immense in the early stages of the NCAA season. He’d put up nine assists in 10 games so far while quarterbacking the Wolverines power-play. Only one freshman in the NCAA has more assists than Mews. That would be Penn State’s superstar-in-the-making, Gavin McKenna.
The injury came on a play behind the net against Notre Dame on Saturday when Fighting Irish forward Sutter Muzzatti delivered a knee-on-knee hit that left Mews unable to get back to the bench on his own, according to Auchincloss.
The Wolverines did not confirm the specifics of the injury, only that Mews will be unavailable for the rest of the NCAA season.
