TORONTO, ONTARIO, Canada – The Utah Mammoth couldn’t retain their momentum from the previous night, falling 5-3 in a disappointing loss to Toronto.
The Leafs (8-5-1, 17 points) hosted Utah (9-5-0, 18 points) at Scotiabank Arena on Wednesday, November 5.

Toronto begins the night third in the NHL in scoring, averaging 3.62 goals per game. 16 different Maple Leafs already have a goal this season, led by seven goals from Auston Matthews.
John Tavares (six goals) and William Nylander (five goals) trail Matthews but lead the team with 16 and 18 points, respectively. Matthew Knies (four goals, 12 assists) also has 16 points.
The Leafs are 6-2-1 at Scotiabank Arena this season, while Utah is a stout 5-3 on the road.

First Period
As has been the case all season, Utah’s defense got off to a good start. The club remained one of two teams this season to not allow a goal in the opening five minutes.

Toronto’s John Tavares pinged a shot off the pipes midway through the period after celebrating his 500th career goal pregame.
Dmitri Simashev has one of the most disruptive and active sticks in the NHL.
With his long reach, he consistently pokes the puck away from dangerous forwards and wins so many battles.

The first power play of the night for either team generated few scoring chances for Utah. The only solid shot during the PP was a Nick Schmaltz wrist shot.
Late in the period, Lawson Crouse whipped a pass to the front of the net that gave Michael Carcone a golden chance. Carcone flipped the puck into the net for a 1-0 lead and his third goal of the season.

Utah outshot the Maple Leafs eight shots to five and out-hit them seven to three, controlling the first period.
Second Period
Toronto stepped up its intensity to open the second 20 minutes. A more deliberate attack put the Mammoth on their heels for several minutes.
The refocused Maple Leafs evened the game 1-1 when William Nylander scored his sixth goal of the year. Matthew Knies and John Tavares assisted on the goal.

Toronto kept pushing, adding a second goal with 11:02 left in the period. Former Utah Hockey Club player Matias Maccelli and Jake McCabe combined to assist on Auston Matthews’ eight goal of the year.

The Mammoth earned two power plays later in the period. The first came up empty with another punchless man-advantage.
Utah’s subsequent PP was a much more organized shift. The Mammoth had several good scoring chances despite coming up empty.

The period ended with Jack McBain earning a two-minute minor penalty for cross-checking.
Once the offense really clicks for Simashev, he has the potential to be a top defenseman in the NHL.
