It was a busy day at Pittsburgh Penguins practice with three new faces, plenty of news, injury updates, and some background news that the Penguins’ winning ways are keeping veterans off the NHL trade block. Elsewhere in the Daily, the Hurricanes are stumping for a defenseman, the Canadiens are shopping for centers, The Athletic looked at the Team USA bubble players (minus one local one), and the Zegras-Flyers renewal is bringing rave reviews.
Maintenance day? I wrote a story and did the hour-long live chat. I also did a few loads of laundry, walked for breakfast, and chilled at a coffee shop. I must tell you, I feel so much better today. We’ll see if my writing improves. I’ll admit that it’s lacked creativity or color lately. I thought the Live Chat was pretty good–good pacing and stayed on point.
Maybe to better serve you, I will take a few more minutes here and there. Perhaps next week in Sweden, I will go hunt moose on a Harley.
The boys in Edmonton always have some interesting questions, and they dig deeper than the usual perfunctoriness that out-of-town radio asks. It was fun, and we really got into some real Sidney Crosby comparisons. Here’s my radio appearance (with video on YouTube) with Kevin Karius and Dave Schlemko on Sports 1440.
Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Shelly Anderson did a bang-up job at practice. It’s almost like Shells has been doing this for 40 years. First, the injury updates on Noel Acciari, Justin Brazeau, and Tristan Jarry.
Then, there was some practice fallout. Ben Kindel got the bump, Danton Heinen is auditioning at center, and the Penguins’ lineup is different.
As part of the call-ups and Jarry’s injury, Sergei Murashov will get a few looks in the Penguins’ net. Here’s the plan and Murashov’s reaction.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now
The Athletic ($): Pierre LeBrun got the one-on-one with Kyle Dubas this week about being happy for his newly signed players performing well, thus keeping players off the trade block, to prospects acquired by past regimes, and no regrets on his Toronto exit.
LeBrun didn’t actually report that Penguins players were off the block in his Athletic article, but he said so on TSN while promoting it.
Sportsnet: There are nine new NHL coaches. Justin Bourne takes a closer look at each, including Penguins coach Dan Muse, and how all of the new guys are doing behind their bench.
Bleacher Report: In a clip from his daily podcast, Frank Seravalli reported the Carolina Hurricanes are looking for d-men.
And more national analysts dropping bombs on radio or podcasts:
Elliotte Friedman: Re Canadiens center search: There’s no question [Kadri’s] the name that’s being discussed, for a while it was Sid, would Sid go to Montreal; Pittsburgh’s going well so it kinda knocks all that talk down – Morning Cuppa Hockey (11/5)

Philly Hockey Now: More good pub for Trevor Zegras. Team and coaches offering praise. The stat sheets offer even more praise. As Will James writes, Zegras badly needed that fresh start, and Zegras is getting it with the Philadelphia Flyers.
Boston Hockey Now: Don’t mess with Nikita Zadorov on the ice or online. He flattened Islanders super rookie Matthew Schaefer, cracked a postgame joke about it, got plenty of social media flak from Islanders fans, then verbally flattened them, too. Here’s the Boston Bruins defenseman’s go-round.
