Following an 0-2-1 record over the last three games, the Chicago Blackhawks got back on track with a 5-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday.
After accumulating an 0-2-1 record over the first three games of the road trip, the Chicago Blackhawks got back on track Wednesday night. Two quiet opening periods came to a climax with an exhilarating, five-goal period for the visitors.
Unlike Monday’s loss, the Blackhawks were heavily outshot on Wednesday. Despite the shot discrepancy, the Blackhawks capitalized on their chances and found a way to score in front of the opposing net.
The Canucks’ 45-28 shot advantage did not matter. Spencer Knight stopped 43 of 45 shots faced, Tyler Bertuzzi netted a hat trick, and both Connor Bedard and Ilya Mikheyev lit the lamp in the team’s 5-2 win at Rogers Arena.

Throughout the course of the game, the Canucks had solid chances with a number of follow-up looks as well. However, Blackhawks goalie Spencer Knight was not phased. He remained poised and played a brilliant game in net for the Hawks. Desperate for a win, Knight’s performance is exactly what the doctor ordered.

Knight really delivered for the Hawks early, keeping them in the game as they found their footing. Vancouver put 35 of their 45 total shots on Knight in the first and second period, with Knight stopping every shot. A would-be goal was waved off after a coach’s challenge for goaltender interference.
Knight continues to be a bright spot for the Blackhawks. He easily could be considered the first star of the game with his performance on Wednesday.
Dirty Goals

Tyler Bertuzzi’s hat trick was not pretty, but it was effective. The gritty forward scored all three of his goals near the goal crease. The first two were his patented backdoor tap-ins, while his third goal was a beautiful clean-up of a juicy rebound. Kevin Lankinen made some beautiful saves, but the ugly goals ultimately cost him.
In addition, Ilya Mikheyev’s tally against his former team was also out in front. After circling around the net, Mikheyev settled in front of Lankinen. Oliver Moore and Ryan Donato teamed up for a pair of crisp, short passes with the puck finding Mikheyev, who then buried the chance.
The Blackhawks are doing a great job cleaning up around opponents’ nets. With players like Donato, Mikheyev, and Bertuzzi on the roster, they have the grit and the size to compete for positioning in front of opposing nets. It doesn’t always have to be pretty, but if pucks are finding twine, its effective.
Late-Game Fun

Although the Canucks made it a 4-2 game late, Spencer Knight and Connor Bedard connected for an exciting empty net goal. After the Canucks put a long shot on net, Knight instinctually popped up and thought about trying for the open net. His bid came up short, but served as a pass to Bedard, who finished the chance and added the team’s fifth goal. As a result, Knight picks up his first assist of the season.
Bedard might get credit for the goal, but the quick thinking of Spencer Knight made it all happen.
Author’s Thoughts
The Blackhawks rebounded in a big way on Wednesday. The second half of their six-game road trip includes a lot of teams they match up well against. If a 1-1-0 or 1-0-1 record can be achieved over the final two games of the trip, it won’t be a complete failure of a trip.
Spencer Knight continues to be brilliant. Once thought of as a position with no guaranteed answer for the future, Knight stepped in and became the guy immediately. He has been even better to begin his first full season in Chicago, and Wednesday was just another brilliant showing. In 10 games, Knight has a 5-3-2 record, 2.56 goals-against average, and .919 save percentage.
Oliver Moore got on the scoresheet for the first time this season, assisting on Ilya Mikheyev’s game-winning goal. Since Moore was called up ahead of Monday’s game, the Hawks’ pace on this road trip has improved. His speed is a huge factor, and more games like Wednesday will make it incredibly difficult for him to lose his roster spot when Jason Dickinson returns from IR.
Frank Nazar had a nice chance in the first period, but he appears snake bitten recently. Nazar’s pace of play will result in goals, so it is just a matter of time until he returns to the scoresheet.
What’s On Tap Next?
The Blackhawks venture east to Calgary, Alberta for an 8:00 p.m. CT start on Friday night. The struggling Calgary Flames will not be an easy opponent, but one the Blackhawks should capitalize against and keep their winning ways rolling. Friday is the final game out west, with the Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings closing out the road trip in the Motor City on Sunday afternoon.
