Patrick Kane on his health, Detroit Red Wings’ start
Detroit Red Wings Patrick Kane & Todd McLellan, Nov. 6, 2025 in Detroit.
Patrick Kane should be back on the ice for the Detroit Red Wings this weekend.
Whether it is as soon as Friday, Nov. 7 when they host the New York Rangers won’t be known till that day, but the fact Kane went through an entire practice after being sidelined three weeks is an encouraging sign.
“I think I’m feeling pretty good,” Kane said after Thursday’s practice, the first at Little Caesars Arena since they left on a trip on Oct. 27, and Kane’s first since getting injured Oct. 17.
“It’s nice to get back in practice with the team. I feel pretty good and we’ll go from there and see how it is tomorrow.”
Kane, who turns 37 on Nov. 19, suffered an upper-body injury in the fifth game of the season when he slid into the boards late in the third period against the Tampa Bay Lightning. After skating on his own for the last couple weeks, he was back at practice on his usual line, with Marco Kasper and Alex DeBrincat, and Kane was also on the first power play unit.
“I made contact with him a couple times about how he felt,” Todd McLellan said. “He said he felt pretty good, so I think that’s positive. But that decision will be made tomorrow when we get a little more information.”
The Wings have gone 5-4 without Kane, who has two goals and two assists in five games, clearly missing the future first-ballot Hockey Hall of Famer.
“One, he’s Patrick Kane,” McLellan said. “Two, he’s very competitive. Three, he handles the puck well and sees things. He’s got the ability to play fast or slow.  He finishes off that line well when they’re playing good.
“Cat, I thought on the trip, had some good looks, some good shots produced offensively. I think there’s more in Marco Kasper. Certainly the power play, he’s a guy that a lot of it runs through.”
Kane called it “brutal,” to miss nine games. Adding to his angst to get back is the desire to be selected to represent Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
“That’s the way it is, right?” Kane said. “I mean, what are you going to do? I think you look at the positives from it. I’m not out an extended or longer period of time. So happy that I’ve been able to progress, especially the past week or so, and happy with where I’m at.”
