Toronto Maple Leafs centre David Kampf is away from the team, pondering his future after starting the season in the AHL.

Kampf, 30, was waived at the beginning of the season and was sent to the AHL. He played in four games with the Marlies, recording one assist.

TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston said on Thursday’s edition of Insider Trading that there could be a resolution between Kampf and the Maple Leafs by the weekend.

“They’ve got a lot of forwards up and down the organization, and one whose status has been a little bit unclear in the last week is David Kampf,” said Johnston. “He’s been away from the Toronto Marlies, pondering his future, what he wants to do next. I’m told that could be coming to a resolution by this weekend. Could even see Kampf rejoin the Marlies. We’ll see what happens there.”

He is in the third season of a four-year, $9.6 million contract that carries an AAV of $2.4 million.

An undrafted free agent, Kampf signed a two-year, entry-level contract in May of 2017 with the Chicago Blackhawks, where he spent four seasons before joining the Maple Leafs as a free agent in 2021 on a two-year deal.

After tallying 26 and 27 points in his first two years in Toronto, Kampf inked the four-year extension in June of 2023.

Kampf struggled in 2024-25, his first under head coach Craig Berube. He scored five goals with 13 points in 59 games while averaging a career-low 12:24 of ice time. He skated in just one playoff game, a 6-1 loss to the Florida Panthers in Game 5 of the second round.
