It was a whomp-whomp night for the Islanders.

They were out of sorts, particularly in their inability to connect on passes. Matthew Schaefer’s pass into Jean-Gabriel Pageau’s skates in the second period turned into a transition goal the other way. They went into a stoppage in the third period thinking they were getting a four-minute power play for rookie Cal Ritchie being high sticked, only to have the call reversed and the teams stay at event strength.

Whomp whomp.

So the Islanders lost 5-2 to the Wild on Friday night at UBS Arena to conclude a 1-1-1 homestand and snap a five-game point streak at home.

The Islanders (6-6-2), who got 21 saves from David Rittich, open a seven-game road trip on Saturday night against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden.

Symptomatic of the Islanders’ passing woes was Schaefer’s misfire that led to Marco Rossi’s score off the rush the other way as the Wild went ahead 4-1 at 9:05 of the second period. The No. 1 pick, skating in the slot, passed up a shot and instead tried to feed Pageau.

Jesper Wallstedt stopped 26 shots for the Wild (6-7-3), who had lost 4-3 in Carolina on Thursday night.

Pageau had brought the Islanders back within 4-2 with a breakaway at 18:51 of the second period, bookending an up-and-down 20 minutes. Bo Horvat’s feed found Emil Heineman in the slot to cut the Wild’s lead to 2-1 at 4:38 – seconds after Heineman’s in-tight backhander was denied – but the Islanders could not sustain the momentum.

Defenseman Brock Faber’s knuckling shot from the shot went off Rittich’s glove to make it 3-1 at 5:56 before Rossi made it a three-goal lead.

The Islanders took the game’s first five shots and were controlling play before Vinnie Hinostroza opened the scoring on the Wild’s first shot, taking a backdoor feed to the crease from defenseman Jonas Brodin at 7:24 of the first period.

Whomp whomp.

The Wild made it 2-0 on their fifth shot – the Islanders had none in that span – as their fourth line produced Ben Yurov’s goal at 12:32 of the first period to finish a scramble at the crease.

Coach Patrick Roy scrambled his lines in the third period, dropping Ritchie from centering Kyle Palmieri and Jonathan Drouin to playing on fourth-line center Casey Cizikas’ wing while Drouin centered Palmieri and Anthony Duclair.

Then Roy double shifted Barzal with Cizikas and Ritchie and that trio was on ice for Kirill Kaprizov’s one-timer to make it 5-2 at 8:33.

Whomp whomp.

Notes & quotes: Captain Anders Lee played in his 855th game, tying Matt Martin for the eighth-most in Islanders’ history … Max Shabanov (upper body) missed his eighth game as he continues to skate on his own. Roy said the Russian rookie is making progress and the Islanders hope he travels with them on their seven-game trip, though Roy is unsure Shabanov will be available to play … Ilya Sorokin is expected to start against the Rangers … Forward Max Tsyplakov and defenseman Adam Boqvist remained the healthy scratches.
