Detroit Red Wings fans were talking about a Patrick Kane offensive play Friday night but it wasn’t the kind of play they were hoping to see.

Kane made a slick play to knock down the puck after a goalie Jonathan Quick misplay. Then, Kane ends up with the puck on his stick, in the crease, with an open net.  Check out the video. Quick pokes Kane’s skate enough to disrupt the play. Kane can’t tap the puck in the net.

“If anyone was going to get the puck in that situation and I could pick one individual,” Detroit coach Todd McLellan said, “I’d pick Patrick Kane. So it didn’t go our way.”

If Kane scores, it’s a 2-2 game. “Now who knows what can happen.”

With no momentum gained on that play, the Red Wings gave up two third period goals and fell 4-1 to the New York Rangers

But that play doesn’t change the fact that Kane is critical to the team’s playoff hopes. One of this team’s issues is finding enough offense on nights captain Dylan Larkin doesn’t score. That’s been evident with Detroit losing three of the last four. Larkin didn’t score in any of those games.

With Kane back after missing nine games with an upper body injury, the Red Wings are expecting to be more dangerous with the puck. No one on the team, Larkin included, can gain the offensive zone with the puck as well as Kane can. He didn’t look overly rusty in his first game back.

“He’s been off for three weeks, and for a good chunk of that, we were gone,” McLellan said. “So he hasn’t practiced with the team. He hasn’t been involved in five-on-five play. But he’s talented enough and smart enough to get back into the game situation and find his flow. So I thought he was effective. He made some plays.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

If Red Wings players want to be a true NHL playoff contender, they have to make sure their recent offensive struggles don’t lead to a significant slump.

Lucas Raymond and coach Todd McLellan have differing thoughts on why the Detroit offense hasn’t been able to produce.

Sergei Fedorov reiterates that he has no desire to look for work in the NHL with the Red Wings or anyone else.

Red Wings prospect forward Brent Solomon (109th, 2025) of the Sioux Falls Stampede picked up a goal and assist in a 6-2 loss to Youngstown to stay tied for the USHL point-scoring lead. Wisconsin recruit Solomon has 10 goals and 10 assists for 20 points, tying him with Alex Pelletier and Cooper Simpson (Boston Bruins draft pick). Solomon has registered 11 points (four goals, seven assists) on the power play.
