The Montreal Canadiens’ start to the 2025-2026 season hints at some exciting things to come for the rest of the campaign.

Sidney Crosby and the Penguins, however, are off to a strong start, and it’s possible that their GM, Kyle Dubas, will ask for a higher price than expected.

That said, the Canadiens’ general manager seems ready to bring out the heavy artillery.

Kent Hughes Sends a Message to Other NHL GMs About a Potential Trade

“That’s why I often say that, at the right moment, we’re going to overpay [give up too many players, prospects, or draft picks] to get a player. At that point, it’ll look like we lost the trade. But maybe we’ll see it in a completely different way.”

“I have a feeling Hughes is doing this to lower the fans’ expectations. After all, he often surprises them with trades or signings that come at a better price than expected.

And I also have the feeling that’s why he once again repeated that he’s willing to overpay in a trade if it helps his team take the next step.

If I were Michael Hage or David Reinbacher, I’d be a little stressed this afternoon – even though Hughes often manages to get things done without going too far past his limit.”

Could Kent Hughes be ready to sacrifice Michael Hage and David Reinbacher – or even both – to get what he wants?

We know the former player agent did everything he could last summer to acquire another top center, but the price was simply too high.

However, that could change, as his team’s strong start might increase pressure from upper management to bring in high-end reinforcements.
