The Buffalo Sabres fell 6-3 to the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night at Lenovo Center, unable to rally despite a strong push in the third period.
Owen Power opened the scoring for Buffalo midway through the first period with his second goal of the season, assisted by rookie Noah Ostlund, who earned his first career NHL assist. Carolina responded with two goals in the second period, including a power-play tally from Andrei Svechnikov, to take a 3-1 lead heading into the third.
The Hurricanes extended their advantage early in the final frame before the Sabres mounted a brief comeback. Alex Tuch and Tage Thompson each scored their sixth goals of the season within a four-minute span to cut the deficit to one. However, Carolina sealed the victory with two empty-net goals in the final minutes to hand Buffalo its second straight loss.
Alex Lyon made 29 saves on 33 shots for the Sabres, who dropped to 5-6-4 on the season.
The Sabres will look to bounce back when they continue their road trip Wednesday night in Salt Lake City, where they will face the Utah Mammoth for the second time in a week. Puck drop is scheduled for 9 p.m.
