An NHL insider believes that the Vancouver Canucks could potentially fetch a pretty significant asset if they decide to trade Kiefer Sherwood before the deadline in early March.

The Vancouver Canucks might be focusing on their goal of making it back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs after missing out last season, but if things continue to go south for Adam Foote’s group, it looks like the trade deadline in March could be quite interesting for the organization.

“If they have a tough stretch in the next 7 games, teams are going to start calling them on Sherwood and Garland.” Dhaliwal said.

Of the two mentioned by Dhaliwal, Sherwood would be more likely to be dealt by the club given his UFA status at season’s end and it looks like Patrik Allvin could get a decent return for the Columbus, Ohio native.

NHL insider believes Vancouver Canucks could land big asset in Kiefer Sherwood trade

After bringing up Garland and Sherwood as potential trade assets for the Vancouver Canucks while making an appearance on Halford & Brough, Dhaliwal mentioned that the latter could net the Canucks a first round pick, if another piece is attached to the deal such as a bad contract or Vancouver retaining salary.

“You can probably get a 1st round pick if you took something back on Sherwood.” Dhaliwal said.

“There’s a little bit of hesitancy; he keeps this up he’s probably in the $4m maybe $5m range depending on term, I think the Canucks are, or were anyway…weary…allocating those types of cap dollars” David Pagnotta said recently.

If the Vancouver Canucks continue to trend in the wrong direction and Kiefer Sherwood is able to sustain his current level of play, then there’s no question he’ll be their top trade asset ahead of the deadline in March.
