The Pittsburgh Penguins got shortchanged in a couple of areas Saturday afternoon. They received one lonely power play despite heavily pressuring the New Jersey Devils for long stretches, and they lost in a shootout. We have full coverage from New Jersey, and we’re back for the game today before jetsetting around the globe on Monday. Elsewhere in the Daily, the NHL seems ready to fight for more 19-year-olds to join their organizations in the AHL, rather than being confined to junior hockey. Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin addressed Elias Pettersson’s future with the club, and the St. Louis Blues are open for business on the NHL trade market.
It was a long drive last night, and I had to stop to do some Hockey Now training. At a truck stop in Mill Hall, PA, I trained our new LA Hockey Now writer, Oliver Figlin how to publish stories and had a good conversation about how to be successful. The LA website is still wonky on the desktop, but we pushed forward anyway, and we have high hopes for Oliver.
Shelly wrote up the Ryan Graves story. I was impressed with his explanation about Wilkes-Barre.

Pittsburgh HockeyNow: Would you like to skip the recap and go straight to the Report Card analysis? There is a villain emerging, and the Penguins carried the play, but otherwise couldn’t get the winner before getting skunked in another shootout. The silver linings, disappointments, and what to carry forward in the Penguins analysis.
On the flip side, goalie Jake Allen got praise upon praise for his theft. Here’s the New Jersey Devils coverage.
I walked over to Graves after the media scrum. I knew I wanted to get deeper into his play than the usual 90-second scrum. After some jokes about a bankshot off Ondrej Palat’s face (he said chest, but it sure looked like face), I simply asked–“You had a pretty good game–have you put, you know, the past behind you and begun to settle in?”
And his answer was detailed and in-depth. He really did attack it like starting over and explained some things I didn’t expect. Here is the story on the re-emergence of Ryan Graves.
Hey, good on anyone who embraces a second chance after a spoonful of bitter medicine.
Steelers Now: It’s a Steelers Sunday, too. So, just dive in for all of the Steelers coverage you can handle.
NHL Trade Rumors, News, & National Hockey Now
The Score: All aboard. Last train leaving St. Louis. Jordan Kyrou was a healthy scratch, and Brayden Schenn’s name has been tossed about again. The St. Louis Blues are sinking, and they are making just about everyone available on the trade market.
LA Hockey Now: Oliver’s first story with us. The next go-round will be a bit longer, but he tells the story. From villain to unlikely hero, hello Corey Perry.
Sportsnet Video: The Headlines segment on HNIC — Allowing 19-year-olds into the AHL has been a big issue. The CHL has fought tooth and nail to prevent it, but more NHL GMs want some control of their prospects. It was supposed to be one per team next year, but now GMs are pushing for more. Elliotte Friedman is all over the story.
Common sense compromise? One year of juniors after a player is drafted, then the team can keep the player in juniors until his eligibility expires or pull him to the AHL, their choice. The Penguins drafted Tanner Howe with the 46th pick in the 2024 Draft, and he could turn pro this year. They drafted Harrison Brunicke with the 44th pick, and he was limited to the NHL or the WHL. Why? Their birthdays are a few months apart.
That’s silly. This isn’t Little League.
Sportsnet Toronto: There is officially a goaltending problem up north. It’s panic time for the Blue and White.
Vegas Hockey Now: I love Hannah Kirkell’s effort and hockey knowledge out in Vegas. Things are beginning to click for the big guys in the desert. They went all-in for Mitch Marner, and the engine is starting to turn over. A furious rally earned them a point, but bigger things are to come for the Vegas Golden Knights.
Colorado Hockey Now: Are you kidding me?! Check this out — It was a bad, baaaaaddd night for one team in Edmonton because the Colorado Avalanche scored NINE.
