Another week of Flyers hockey is in the books and it’s time once again for my Flyers Files observations from the week.

After a disappointing weekend on home ice, featuring back-to-back losses to Toronto and Calgary, the Flyers responded with a strong road trip, sweeping two games. They appeared to be on the path to another win at home on Saturday, controlling play down the stretch of a tie game after a slow start to Ottawa. The Senators pulled things out in overtime, but the Flyers earned five out of a possible six points this week.

Here’s this week’s Flyers Files:

Konecny Starting to Pile Up Points

It’s been an interesting season for Travis Konecny so far. Through the first five games of the season, Konecny had just two assists. On Oct. 20, he scored his first goal of the season, and since then, the points have started to pile up.

Konecny has five goals and six assists for 11 points in the last 10 games, including a current seven-game points streak. And while he’s not lighting the lamp at any high frequency, he’s helping other do it.

As great as the points are, it feels like Konecny is still trying to put together the complete game. Some of his offensive has been via empty-net goals. Konecny still has some moments where he’s passing it up too much instead of just shooting the puck. The points are a great first step, but there needs to be a little something more to see the player who has been the top point producer for the last several seasons.

Cam York Showing Signs of Revitalization

One player that has really started to stand out is Cam York. York wasn’t able to start the season on time with injury, but has quickly returned to his usual role on the top pairing. And so far, he’s looking every bit the part.

Two seasons ago, York was showing signs of rounding into the defenseman the Flyers saw the potential in years before. He scored 10 goals and had 30 points in his first full 82-game season at 23 years old.

Last season was marred by injury and a rocky relationship with John Tortorella. The goal for this season was to see if that player from two seasons ago was back. He is with a vengeance.

In just 11 games, York is already more than halfway to his points total from last season. He has three multi-point games, including back to back games this week in Montreal and Nashville.

York’s already been a workhorse on the blue line, averaging just under 25 minutes per game. Adding offense with more consistency will make even more of a statement.

As Michkov Turns Corner, More Details on Slow Start

Things appear to be looking up for Matvei Michkov. Stuck on one goal for nine games, Michkov finally got his second of the season on Thursday night.

He wasted no time getting his third, scoring on Saturday as well. Michkov has picked up five assists between his first and second goals of the season, but it still felt like an underwhelming start with limited ice time, fewer shots on goal, and not finding production on a regular basis.

But it was what Michkov said after the game that stood out.

“For the first time in my life, I took four months off. No hockey,” Michkov said. “Training is not the same. So somewhere at the beginning of the season, I lost concentration, but with each game I’m feeling better and better.”

“I love scoring and honestly I can’t live without this feeling. When I score, I get a kind of rush and feel much more confident than I did at first. And when you start thinking about it, you step out on the ice and your whole body feels heavy. It builds up with every game.”

Michkov thrives on scoring. You saw hot streaks from him at various points of his rookie season, none bigger than the final nine games after Tortorella was fired. That said, it has not come together just yet this season, and it seems Michkov admitted that taking so much time off was the issue.

It may have cost him the first 10-14 games to get his legs back. But now he’s looking more and more like the player the Flyers want him to be.
