The Los Angeles Kings (7-5-4) took care of the Pittsburgh Penguins (9-5-3) by a score of 3-2 on the road, after a goal in the middle of the third period from winger Kevin Fiala.
Defenseman Drew Doughty outlet the puck up the far wall to Fiala, who found himself on a one-on-one with a defender. Fiala moved to his backhand before cutting across the crease back to his forehand and roofing it to the top of the net, putting his team in the lead for what would be the winning goal. This was also Fiala’s 500th point of his career.
Winger Corey Perry also scored for L.A. in the third period, tying the score 2-2 just under 5 minutes into the final frame. On a three-on-two, Trevor Moore fed a pass to the middle to defenseman Cody Ceci, who dropped it back to Perry at the hashes. The veteran took his time and buried it blocker side to tie the game.
The start of the contest had the home crowd on their feet, with Pittsburgh and winger Tommy Novak getting on the board first just under nine minutes in. A great pass from center Evgeni Malkin fell right onto Novak’s tape in front of the goal, who redirected the puck past Kings goaltender Darcy Kuemper.
Kuemper finished the night with 31 saves on 33 total shots.
L.A.’s captain, center Anze Kopitar, responded on the other end of the opening frame of play with a power play goal, tying the game at one apiece. On an odd goal, Kopitar launched a pass toward the middle of the net from no angle on the goal line, and it somehow trickled past Penguins goaltender Sergey Murashov.
Murashov had 24 total saves on 27 shots.Â
Only Pittsburgh winger Anthony Mantha was able to find the net for either team during the second period, making the score 2-1 in the Penguins’ favor just under eight minutes into the second period. On the power play, defenseman Kris Letang snapped a pass toward the middle of the ice to Mantha, who caught it in stride and finished with a leg kick past Kuemper.
With the late surge, Los Angeles gets back in the win column and improves their impressive road record to 6-1-2.Â
