How is that for a headline? The Pittsburgh Penguins didn’t like the first verse, but they sang the second verse the same as the first. After carrying the play against the LA Kings, the Penguins gave away the game in the third. We’ve got the full analysis of the game, the team’s bigger picture, and of Sergei Murashov’s NHL debut.
Elsewhere in the Daily, there appears to be a bit of friction in the Philadelphia Flyers’ room with Matvei Michkov. The Edmonton Oilers might just have had it with goalie Stuart Skinner, and the Ottawa Senators are shopping on the NHL trade market for the very things the Penguins have to offer.
I should be on the way to Sweden by now, but two flights have currently been cancelled or delayed, so I’m in Pittsburgh until early afternoon, and hopefully no later, or I’ll miss practice tomorrow.

Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: If you love a good sequel, Sunday was not for you. If you love a half-baked, disappointing, recycled script, well then– here you go. The Penguins lose to the LA Kings, and here is the Penguins recap!
OK, let’s really get into it. There is a sense of optimism and identity emerging, so bad losses hurt not just for the day but also shed light on the bigger picture. The Penguins are coming to grips with their potential and their weekend whiff. Here’s what happened, why, how, and the player grades in the Penguins report card.
And we take readers inside the Penguins locker room. A couple of the players had big praise for rookie goalie Sergei Murashov, and the rookie goalie handled the media pretty well, too. Here’s the postgame locker room centered around Sergei Murashov.
The Steelers? Wow, they blew it. There is a lot to dissect and even more to be angry about than you realized. Yeah, for REAL and PROFESSIONAL Steelers coverage (Seriously, stop giving content thieves and fanboys attention), go straight to SteelersNow.com.
That’s a real thing for me. I wish I could help casual media consumers be more sophisticated about the difference between real journalists and aggregators. There are two types of outlets: One that gathers the information, has inside insights and professional standards, and one that waits for the first one to do the work, then rewrites it, followed by populist opinions. Populist opinions are great for affirmation, but usually aren’t good at bringing more understanding. But I digress…
NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Meow
Sportsnet Ottawa: The Ottawa Senators are shopping for a right-handed defenseman and a scoring winger. Huh. Gee, which team has both of those to spare? Oh, right, the Penguins. Connecting dots on serious trade speculation.
Sportsnet Edmonton: Stuart Skinner was lit up. Edmonton lost 9-1 Saturday, and that is just about it for Skinner writes Mark Spector. The Oilers look done with Skinner, and it’s time for a change.
Flyers Nitty Gritty: Matvei Michkov likes to score goals, but he doesn’t always play an honest game. The captain wasn’t happy, so it stands to reason that other players have also said something privately. Sean Couturier put the boots to Michkov for not helping the team with a complete effort.
Detroit Hockey Now: UH OH. Remember that hot start and enthusiasm in Detroit? Yeah, it’s gone. A slump followed. As Bob Duff puts his boots to the Winged Wheel, they are who we thought they were. Bad news for the Detroit Red Wings.
New Jersey Hockey Now: Arseny Gritsyuk impressed me on Saturday. He’s got some offensive game. As our NJHN colleagues write, he’s still got a lot more to give the New Jersey Devils, too.
Off to the airport. If you have any Stockholm recommendations, I’d love them. I’m staying on the water closer to the arena, rather than the heart of Stockholm. Wish me luck getting there. And subscribe to PHN+!
