Wednesday morning, Utah’s NHL team, known as the Utah Hockey Club in their inaugural season, announced they will be named the Mammoth from the 2025-26 season onward.
The team settled on the name Mammoth because the extinct species used to call the Utah area their home about 10,000 years ago. They added that the species’ strength, momentum and other qualities are similar in their hockey team. Settling on the Mammoth took a 13-month process involving 850,000 fan votes.
Fans rushed to the Delta Center Wednesday for their first shots at new Mammoth merch. Merchandise will become available to the rest of the public next Wednesday on the NHL’s website.
“From day one, we committed that this team would be built with and for the people of Utah, and we are excited to celebrate today’s launch with the entire state,” said Ryan and Ashley Smith, owners of the Utah Mammoth. “The community chose the Utah Mammoth, and it stands as a symbol of who we are, where we came from, and the unstoppable force we’re building together.”
